Relevant Experience

Encik Shahriman was appointed Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad on 1 October 2019. In this role he heads the Group Islamic Banking business of CIMB Group including Islamic wholesale banking, Islamic consumer banking, Islamic commercial banking and Islamic asset management and investment across key markets such as Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

 

Encik Shahriman has over two decades of experience in the corporate sector, of which 16 years were in Islamic Banking and Finance-related leadership roles at HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad as Director, Wholesale Banking and CitiGroup where he served as Head of Islamic Banking, Citibank Berhad amongst others. In these respective capacities, he has been an instrumental contributor towards the growth of the Islamic banking and finance industry via the introduction of global award-winning capital markets and treasury solutions.

 

Encik Shahriman started his career as a management associate with Citibank, and was selected to undertake leadership development programmes both regionally and globally in his time with CitiGroup. In his leadership roles with CitiGroup and HSBC Amanah, Encik Shahriman was tasked with growing Islamic revenue contributions from Islamic Wholesale Banking, Treasury and Markets businesses globally. Encik Shahriman has strong leadership, technical, legal and risk management expertise gained from his stint in these cross-border institutions. 

 

Encik Shahriman has played an active role in the development of Malaysia’s Islamic banking industry, with a longstanding role in the Treasury committee of the Association of Islamic Banks in Malaysia (AIBIM). In this capacity he was involved in instrumental industry initiatives such as developing, amongst others, a commodity exchange for Islamic finance purposes, Islamic structured products, documentation standards for Islamic derivatives as well as an Islamic credit support mechanism.

 

Encik Shahriman is a Chartered Professional in Islamic Finance and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Finance from Lancaster University. In addition, he is a Financial Markets Certificate (Licensed Dealer) holder in Malaysia.
